Support for When Your Balance Falls Short

Courtesy Pay and Overdraft Protection are services that act like a safety net by allowing your transactions to be paid, even if you don’t have enough money in your account. They are designed to protect our members from the frustration, embarrassment, and additional costs of declined transactions or returned checks. While fees are associated with these services, they offer peace of mind and financial flexibility for those unexpected moments when you need a little extra coverage.

We encourage all checking account holders to authorize Overdraft Protection from their other RiverLand accounts, which may include savings, money market savings, or a revolving line of credit. Overdraft fees apply as disclosed in our Fee Schedule.

Use the Opt-In/Opt-Out Form to add or remove these services from your checking account.  

How does RiverLand cover my overdrafts?

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway.  We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

  • We offer Courtesy Pay, which comes with your account.*
  • We also offer Overdraft Protection, which is a link to your savings account(s) or revolving line of credit loan. This is a more cost-effective option than Courtesy Pay. Ask us to learn more about Overdraft Protection.

What is the Courtesy Pay option that comes with my account?

Courtesy Pay is a non-contractual, discretionary overdraft service available to eligible checking account holders based on their account activity and history. If you are eligible for Courtesy Pay, we may approve overdrafts on your account within your current available Courtesy Pay limit.

We may authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other debit transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

We will not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to:

  • ATM withdrawal transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

What fees will I be charged?

Under our Courtesy Pay program, we will charge you a fee of $27.50 for each overdraft item we pay. There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.

Under our Overdraft Protection program, a $5 overdraft transfer fee will be assessed per transfer.

Designate Checking Overdraft Protection from Your RiverLand Accounts

By completing this form you will establish new overdraft protection and all prior overdraft designations will be discontinued so be sure to include all accounts from which you would like overdraft protection.

RiverLand may transfer available funds from my designated account(s), in the order that they are listed, to pay any item presented for payment against my account. If there are insufficient funds in the first account designated, overdraft protection may utilize funds from more than one designated account to clear a single item, and each transfer will incur a service fee as disclosed in the current rate and fee schedule. I understand that if my designated Account(s) have insufficient funds for items presented for payment, those items will be returned, unpaid.
