Zelle App Phasing Out: What Now?
If you send or receive money using Zelle®, you may have heard that Zelle's standalone app will be phased out after March 31, 2025. We understand that many RiverLand members have registered their debit cards with Zelle or may have their RiverLand account numbers connected to a Zelle user at another financial institution. While this is not a change RiverLand can control, we can help make it a smooth transition for our members.
Here are common Zelle questions:
Is RiverLand partnered with Zelle?
No, RiverLand does not have a relationship with Zelle. This means if your Zelle account was set up using only a RiverLand debit card or account number, you may lose access after the app is discontinued. If you are using Zelle through another financial institution, you should be able to access your Zelle account through your other financial institution’s mobile app.
If I receive payments from a Zelle user, will those stop?
It depends on how it’s set up. Zelle allows its users to enter routing and account numbers for their contacts. If you’ve given your RiverLand account number to a Zelle user, and they pay you through that method, you may not be affected by the change.
Does RiverLand have an option for person-to-person payments (P2P)?
While we do not have a traditional P2P option, we do offer “member-to-member transfers” for sending funds to other RiverLand members and “external account transfers” for sending funds to your account at other financial institutions. Both of these options are located under our Move Money area in online banking. If you do not see the option to “Manage Destinations” under Move Money, contact us. We can enable the feature for you.
We plan to launch a person-to-person payment program later in 2025.
Can I use my RiverLand account with Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal?
Yes! Members can connect their RiverLand account, debit card, or credit card to apps like Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App. While these are convenient ways to move money, we do not recommend leaving a large balance in these apps because they are not NCUA or FDIC-insured.
Can I use my RiverLand debit and credit card with Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Yes! Visit our Mobile Wallets page for more information.
Security Tips for Payment Apps
Payment apps, such as Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, are convenient to use because they allow you to transfer money quickly. With that in mind, payment app users are a lucrative target for scammers and hackers. Here are a few security tips to help keep your money safe while using payment apps.
- Ensure Secure Logins: Just like your RiverLand account, many apps have an extra layer of protection (e.g., a security code text, passcode, or FaceID) to prevent someone from easily accessing your account. Check your app's settings to ensure you have all available security features enabled, and update your password regularly.
- Keep Your Balance Small: As we mentioned above, most payment apps are not NCUA or FDIC-insured. This means that keeping large balances is not recommended. If the app ever shuts down or the company fails, your balance is not protected like it is at RiverLand.
- Turn on Notifications: While receiving notifications about your own account activity may feel redundant, it's important to know when your account is sending or receiving money. Alerts can help you catch fraud in the moment and shut down your accounts quickly.
- Only Send Money to People You Trust: Transfers in payment apps are usually instant, making it hard to get your money back if it's sent to the wrong person. Therefore, scammers will try to coerce you into sending money through payment apps. Always double-check the information of the person you're sending money to. Ensure they're a legitimate person or trusted business before hitting the send button.
